October 2025 Amazon/Andes Trip

Welcome & Team

We’re getting excited about this wonderful trip! Ed-Ventures in Missions (EVM) is extremely thankful you chose to go on this “Edventure.” Our team of 15 volunteers includes:

  • 1 pre-med student (Kevin)
  • 1 newly graduated RN from Canada (Ashley)
  • 4 physicians
  • 1 nurse practitioner (NP)
  • 1 social worker / mental health specialist
  • 7 emergency department RNs

Most of the team has Emergency Room experience.

Travel Dates

One-Week — Iquitos

Where we serve: Remote jungle communities along the lower Ucayali River or within the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. This trip also includes a one- to two-day clinic in an underserved urban neighborhood of Iquitos.

Partner: EVM partners with Amazon Promise (AP) to provide primary health and dental care, laboratory testing, and health education.

Cost & What’s Included

One-week trip cost: $1,450 to AP (due July 31st, 2025). This includes:

  • A combination of jungle lodging and city hotel accommodations
  • All boat and bus transportation
  • Meals while in the jungle (city meals not included, except lunch on jungle departure day)
  • Medical and clinic operational supplies
  • Interpreters and logistical support, including post-trip patient follow-up

Rooming: Most accommodations are shared. If you require private accommodations, let us know—available for an additional cost.

Notes

  • This is a unique opportunity for students to gain global health experience working alongside seasoned Peruvian and U.S. physicians and nurses.
  • Trips are scheduled months in advance to ensure we have enough volunteers to cover boats, fuel, staff, medications/supplies, housing, post-trip care, and other logistics. A minimum of 6 volunteers is required for each team.
  • If a trip is under-enrolled, we will notify you at least 45 days in advance if cancellation becomes necessary.

Post-Mission Reflection & Team-Building

After the mission, we’ll spend time together reflecting on our experience and strengthening the team.


Inka Trail — 4 Days / 3 Nights

Day 1 —
Cusco → Km 82 → Wayllabamba

  • Pickup: Hotel in Cusco (04:30–05:00)
  • Transport: Private tourist bus to Km 82 (Piscacucho)
  • Trek begins: ~09:00 after breakfast
  • Sites: Miskay community, Llactapata archaeological site
  • Meals: Lunch on the trail (camp chef)
  • Overnight: Wayllabamba campsite (3,000 m.a.s.l.)
  • Distance: ~11 km (5–6 hours)

Day 2 —
Wayllabamba → Warmiwañusca → Pacaymayo

  • Breakfast: Early, with Andean mountain views
  • Challenge: Ascent to Warmiwañusca (Dead Woman’s Pass, 4,215 m.a.s.l.) — highest point of the trail
  • Lunch: After the pass
  • Descent: To Pacaymayo valley
  • Overnight: Pacaymayo campsite (3,600 m.a.s.l.)
  • Distance: ~12 km (6–7 hours)

Day 3 —
Pacaymayo → Runkurakay → Phuyupatamarca → Wiñay Wayna

  • Breakfast: At camp
  • Sites: Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, Intipata
  • Lunch: On the trail
  • Overnight: Wiñay Wayna campsite (2,650 m.a.s.l.) — very close to Machu Picchu
  • Distance: ~16 km (8–9 hours)

Day 4 —
Wiñay Wayna → Inti Punku → Machu Picchu → Cusco

  • Breakfast: Very early (04:00)
  • Final hike: 06:00 start to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) for the first panoramic view of Machu Picchu
  • Guided tour: 2 hours at the Inca citadel
  • Free time: Explore on your own (optional: climb Huayna Picchu — advance ticket required)
  • Return: Bus to Aguas Calientes, lunch, train to Ollantaytambo, and transport to Cusco
  • Arrival in Cusco: ~20:00–22:00

  1. 4/15/25 — $500 deposit toward international flights
  2. 4/25/25 — Photo page of passport due
  3. 4/30/25 — $500 to finalize international flights
  4. 5/15/25 — $300 and AP contribution via the “Donate” button at www.amazonpromise.org
  5. 5/30/25 — $500 EVM deposit (Venmo, Apple Pay, PayPal, check, or cash)
  6. 6/15/25 — $1,040 to finalize EVM bookings
  7. 6/30/25 — Required AP documentation submitted (vaccinations, diplomas, licenses, etc.)
  8. 7/15/25 — Review packing info on AP website for the jungle portion
  9. 7/31/25 — $1,150 to finalize AP fee via “Donate” at www.amazonpromise.org
  10. 8/15/25 — Make sure you have trip insurance
  11. 8/16/25 — In-person trip meeting (meet previous trip volunteers)
